Flat Stanley Goes Surfing

Have you ever heard of the Flat Stanley Project? Well, I hadn’t until a friend asked me to take Flat Stanley surfing as a favor to his young cousin in land-locked Missouri.

Six to ten-year-old students participate in this project by mailing their own “Flat Stanley” to a friend or family member in some far-off place. Stanley is then photographed doing things he’s likely unable to do in his hometown. After a set amount of time, Stanley is returned and a show-and-tell ensues. Flat Stanley has become so popular, he now has his own iPhone app.

So I taped Stanley to the deck of my longboard, and we went tandem surfing. I’d guess that my friend’s cousin was the only one in her school to show a video of Stanley surfing! And unlike me, Stanley didn’t fall once. He’s a natural!
